Curriculum
Opening Time - We will start each day with a 15 minutes lesson focused on what it means to be a follower of Jesus. One day a week, we will be joined by Pastor Joey, who will be leading us in the "Jesus Said Club." This is a curriculum he wrote and is being used in schools all around the world! During this time, we learn all about what Jesus said and did, so we can follow His example. The other day of the week will be spent learning about character. We will have one character trait each month that we will focus on. We will hear related stories from the Bible and learn scripture verses, in addition to discussing how we can model this trait in our lives.
Math - We pull from a variety of resources for our math lessons. Primary Math (Singapore Method) is used as references to ensure all content is covered. We teach those concepts using picture books, games, and other hands-on activities. For families who would like to coordinate their at-home math with what we are covering at tutorial, we provide a day-by-day list of assignments from the Primary Math workbook that coordinate with the content covered in class. These "assignments" are completely optional and are not turned in to the math teacher at tutorial. They simply serve as a guide for parents to be able to review what was learned in class and gauge if more instruction or practice is needed on a particular topic. The related assignments can be found HERE.
Language Arts - This class is filled with activities to get your young reader to fall in love with stories and writing. We will be reading from various books and discussing all the elements that make a story great. We will incorporate copywork and dictation to with passages from these books and discuss the various grammar and literary elements in those passages. Finally, we'll be working on some fun monthly writing projects to develop our writers voice while we enjoy the writing process.
Science - We will be using the science units from The Good and the Beautiful for our lessons this year. We will be covering the topics of Marine Biology, Motion and Simple Machines, and Health and the Physical Body. Click HERE for a list of extension activities you can do at home to further your child's learning about these topics.
Bible - Students will be learning about the names of God during Bible class this year. They will be discovering more about His character, and how we can reflect His character through how we live. They will also spend time each class in journaling and practicing copywork of scripture.
Music - Students will be learning the very basics of music theory as well as listening to music from many different time periods and cultures. They will also get the opportunity to use their own voices to make music as well! Click HERE to view the syllabus for this class.
At Home:
We want our families to have the freedom and flexibility to plan their at-home days according to their children's interest and learning styles. We do not generally assign homework, or require anything for tutorial be done outside of class (the exception being the once-a-year science fair project). However, we know that some guidance can be helpful for planning purposes, especially if this is your first time homeschooling in conjunction with a tutorial. We have created a sample schedule for what your days could look like, along with lists of some of our recommended curriculum. These are not required choices - we always encourage parents to choose what works best for their families - but are simply suggestions to help you in your homeschooling journey.
